Mission Statement

The Conservation Committee will provide information to the Society membership about issues relating to conservation, including, but not limited to, promotion of the use of native plant species, preservation of native plant species and communities, and conservation of rare and endangered species. The website, list serve, and newsletter may serve as tools for informing the membership about conservation issues. The Conservation Committee will advise the Society's Board of Directors on what action should be taken by the Society regarding conservation issues. The Conservation Committee will undertake those actions deemed appropriate by the Society's Board of directors.

Organization

The Conservation Committee will consist of those members of the Society who are interested in pursuing the goals set forth in the Mission Statement.  A chair will be elected by majority vote taken at a scheduled meeting of the Committee. The term of service will be one year. The Committee will meet on a monthly basis throughout the year. Extra meetings may be called when necessary.

Communication with the Board

Communication with the Board will be maintained through a Board liaison person selected by the Board.  Actions by the Committee will be approved by the Board before taking effect.

Current Committee Action Items

The Conservation Committee is currently involved in the following activities:

Yazoo Backwater Pumping Plant in Mississippi (Yazoo Pumps). Please see the Plant Society Blog for more information.

We are currently soliciting members who can assist with any of the following tasks:

- create a compendium of state legislation related to native plant conservation
- research and request links from national and local organizations with similar objectives
-write letters in conjunction with the plant society
- monitor the EQB Monitor for upcoming environmental review of state projects open for public comment
- input on action items for this year

Bullet St. Paul school bus funding cuts are taking their toll in getting city kids involved in the outdoors. The Conservation Committee is writing a brief memo to the Society board proposing to use funds to support a busing initiative.
