A non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and appreciation of Minnesota’s native plants and plant communities through education and public awareness

Join us March 27, 2010 for the annual MNNPS symposium!

No need to travel to Colorado or New Mexico to see sand dunes, there are several places here in our own state to explore. They may not be 500 feet high or quite as vast, but they host many endemic and specialized species and increasingly rare plant communities.

Come spend the day with us at the Bell Museum of Natural History to learn about these various dune systems across Minnesota. From past to present, we'll explore what some of these places have in common to what makes them so unique. Here are the speakers and symposium topics:

Geology and Geomorphology of Interior Dune Systems byKerry Keen, Ph.D., Associate Professor, UW River Falls

Geology and Geomorphology of Great Lakes Dune Systems by Walter Loope, Ph.D., Ecologist, USGS

Dune Ecology by Dennis Yockers, Ph.D., Associate Professor, UW Stevens Point

Dune Native Plant Communities of Minnesota by Hannah Texler, Regional Plant Ecologist, MN DNR

Case Study in Dune Restoration — Weaver Dunes and Adjacent Lands by Matt Graeve, Land Steward, The Nature Conservancy and Kurt Brownell, Natural Resource Specialist, Army Corps of Engineers

Reptiles, Amphibians, and Small Mammals of Minnesota Sand Dunes by Erica Hoaglund, MN DNR Non-game Survey Assistant

Management and Restoration at Uncas Dunes Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) by Ellen Fuge, SNA Management Supervisor, MN DNR and Virginia Blakesley, SNA Natural Resource Technician, MN DNR
